On Mardi Gras morning, your eyes may feast on the intricate beadwork of the Black Masking Indians as they dance down the street, but the first thing you will hear is the back line, known as “the rumble.” Featuring seven GRAMMY-nominated musicians, The Rumble is more than just a band—it is an immersive journey into a wholly unique facet of New Orleans culture. Composed of Big Chief Joseph Boudreaux Jr. of the Young Eagles, trumpeter Aurélien Barnes, trombonist José Maize Jr., bassist TJ Norris, guitarist Ari Teitel, keyboardist Andriu Yanovski, and drummer Trenton O’Neal, the group fuses iconic New Orleans funk with electrifying brass and the visual splendor of the Black Masking carnival tradition. They inherit the groove of The Meters and The Neville Brothers, updating it with a modern, vibrant energy befitting the next generation.
The Rumble's debut album, Live at the Maple Leaf, and follow up Stories From The Battlefield, each received a GRAMMY nomination for Best Regional Roots Music Album. Their live show is a symphony of rich color and propulsive sound, where members share vocal duties and engage the audience in classic Mardi Gras Indian call-and-response chanting. The group pays homage to trailblazers like the Wild Magnolias and Golden Eagles, both of which featured Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Joseph’s father. By adding new layers of depth to their live performances, The Rumble preserves these centuries-old community legacies while ensuring the culture thrives and evolves.

“Ain’t No Dying”, The Rumble’s sophomore studio record, explores the many facets of life in New Orleans from the unique perspective of a Black Masking Indian culture-bearer. The music actively processes the everyday trials and triumphs of this community. As a contemporary offering of the Mardi Gras Indian musical tradition, the album breathes new life into ancestral chants like “Lightning and Thunder,” “Second Line for Me,” and “Big Chief Joe,” while introducing entirely new sonic pieces to the cultural lexicon with tracks like “What They Say,” “Ain’t No Dying,” and “Ain’t Your Year.” While the group's individual virtuosity shines throughout, the true star of the record is their collective synergy—delivered via massive seven-piece vocal harmonies, infectious rhythms, and unforgettable melodies. Ultimately, The Rumble invites listeners to gain a fresh perspective on what it means to be a New Orleanian and a human in 2026, while unlocking a few new dance moves along the way.
